Read this before the first packet

Magic Flames is a fire product. It is simple to use safely, and there are a handful of rules that are not optional. All of them are on this page.

The rules that are not optional

Wood-burning fires only. Never use with propane fire pits or artificial gas logs.
Keep out of reach of children and pets. The packets are small, white and glossy. Store them where a child cannot get one.
Do not open the packet. Do not ingest the contents. If anyone swallows any part of a packet, call your local poison control center or emergency number immediately.
Do not cook food over colored flames. Mineral residue travels in smoke and ash and can settle on food.
Use in a well-ventilated area. Outdoors, or indoors in a wood-burning fireplace with a working flue.
Adults only handle packets and fire. Children can watch. They should not be the ones throwing.

Around the fire

Never lean over the fire to place a packet. Stand back and place it from the side.
Sit upwind. That is good practice with any wood fire, colored or not.
Do not add packets to a fire that is being used for cooking.
Keep a way to put the fire out within reach, and follow local fire regulations and burn bans.
Never leave a fire unattended.

Storage

Store sealed, dry and at room temperature, away from heat sources and open flame.
Keep in the original box, out of reach of children and pets.
Moisture degrades the effect. A damp shed over winter will cost you color.

Ash and disposal

Let ash cool completely before handling it.
Dispose of cold ash in household waste rather than spreading it on garden beds, compost, or anywhere near a pond, stream or storm drain. Mineral residue from colored flames is not good for aquatic life and invertebrates.

What is in the packet

A mineral-based powder in a sealed sachet. Colored flame is produced by mineral salts burning, the same principle as a laboratory flame test. It contains no added fragrance.

We do not describe this product as "chemical free", because nothing that changes the color of fire could be. It is mineral based and non-toxic when used as directed, and both of those statements are ones we can stand behind. Claims that go further than that are marketing, not fact.

If something goes wrong

Swallowed: call poison control or your local emergency number straight away. In the United States, Poison Control is 1-800-222-1222.
In the eyes: rinse with clean water for several minutes and seek medical advice if irritation continues.
On skin: wash with soap and water.
Burns: treat as you would any burn and seek medical attention for anything beyond minor.
